New Tax Lock Legislation

Prime Minister Stephen Harper yesterday announced that a re-elected Conservative government will pass legislation imposing a “tax lock” that prohibits increases to federal income taxes and sales taxes, and new, discretionary payroll taxes, over the next four years.

Protecting Children and Increasing Penalties for Serious Crimes

 

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today outlined a re-elected Conservative government’s plan to keep communities safe and crack down on criminals, including new funding for Child Advocacy Centres, research into the impact of crime on victims, and tougher penalties for serious crimes including murder and drunk driving.

 

Support for Canadian Seniors

Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced new support for single and widowed seniors in Canada.  A re-elected Conservative Government will establish a $2,000 Single Seniors Tax Credit that will extend additional annual tax relief to nearly 1.6 million single and widowed seniors in Canada who have pension income. When combined with the existing $2,000 Pension Income Credit that is claimed by 4.6 million seniors already, this new measure will double the tax relief available to single seniors annually, beginning in January 2017.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that a re-elected Conservative government would double the annual matching grants provided to low- and middle-income families through Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) to help hardworking families save for their children’s post-secondary education.

Canadian Government to Establish Canadian Armed Forces Reserve Base in Yukon

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced a plan to establish a Canadian Armed Forces reserve unit in Yukon. A primary reserve unit in Yukon will complement other measures which the Harper Government has taken to protect Canadian sovereignty in the north and will build a stronger connection between the Canadian Armed Forces and the people of Yukon.

Statement by Prime Minister on the Surplus

Toronto – Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement in response to the Department of Finance’s monthly report on the state of the government’s finances showing a $5 billion surplus for the period of April to June 2015:
